Although Crankin's Time Travel Adventure, a dating video game for a tiny game console Playdate by Panic, is yet to be released, the Internet already got a sneak peek into the creative process behind the game. According to Game Developer, the game design document was made by Katamari creator Keita Takahashi and represents game mechanics (e.g. attack ideas, level modeling and etc).
In an interview with the news outlet, Takahashi revealed that the game's mechanic is like an "old type film projector, all his animation and behavior are present." The document also indicates that Takahashi was trying to bring lots of fun to the game as the game developer was sorting through different types of enemies that players might face while playing the game.
Mind walking poop? Or how about running poop? Still not impressed? Takahashi was also thinking about bringing to the game jumping, and, yes, flying poop. It is unclear though if the game developer included any of these ideas in the game as the document demonstrates only a flying knife as the only item that endangers the player's health.
Panic engineer Shaun Inman also shared Game Developer that the game will have time manipulations thanks to Playdate's crank. Here's how that feature was made in the 2D space:
You have one timeline that enemies are on. It's always moving forwards and time is constantly elapsing. Then you have the timeline that Crankin and Crankette are on, which is powered by the crank.
Inman also admitted there were tons of issues related to Playdate's memory management. Initially, the company was having a hard time trying to access the files needed to ensure the game could meet the required FPS rate as quickly as players could crank them out:
The initial look-up to locate the file on disk took a really long time. So we couldn't load each frame at a time, which meant we had to create these big, individual images that I had just packed into a single file.
Crankin's Time Travel Adventure is a game about a guy trying to make it to his dinner date on time. Although the release date remains undisclosed, the game is expected to be launched later this year.
P.S. We also have a game. It's about NFTs. Check it right here:
