Instagram is set to raise social awareness with expanded hashtags that will give more information about events when people use them. Currently in test mode only, the new feature will first cover such social hashtags as #BlackLivesMatter, #womensrights and #climatecrisis.
Instagram said in a blog announcement that the new feature will help people with fundraising and spreading the word about the "social causes centered directly through hashtags." The Menlo Park-based company added:
Hashtags have long been a place where people discover new causes to support on Instagram, and now when you search for specific hashtags associated with certain movements, you’ll have the option to support them.
The upgraded hashtags will soon support modal pages that include the "Support" option that shows more information about the movement, "Spread the Word" that lets users share hashtags with their friends via DM, and "Create a Fundraiser" that brings gives a tool to start a fundraising campaign on behalf of the movement. It is unclear though how exactly the last feature works or who processes the payment flows.

The whole list of hashtags that will get the upgrade is yet to find out, but Instagram says it has already consulted with various organizations to select the initial list of hashtags, including the GLAAD, NAACP, Advancing Justice – AAJC, Hispanic Heritage Foundation, Othering and Belonging Institute, and IllumiNative.
