Japanese multinational video game company Nintendo is interested in the metaverse as the technology has "great potential," the company's top managers said during a recent earnings call.

Nintendo's top managers also said they're interested in metaverse variations, especially in conjunction with existing video games like Animal Crossing.

But the company doesn't see yet what "surprises and fun" can bring this technology.

Nintendo's comments come after Microsoft announced plans to acquire Call of Duty, World of Warcraft, and Overwatch maker Activision Blizzard for $68.7 billion.

The Redmond-based company said the deal will accelerate the growth in its gaming business and will provide "building blocks for the metaverse."
